I have read some posts on various uni jobs....
The ELI at KAU is a huge org and you only work 26 weeks of the year and 3 hrs of teaching each day. 1 hr of office work....
60 days out plus other holidays.
Benefits are good.
For me, KFUPM is the best uni job in the KSA but if I HAD to live there, the ELI is ok.
With that in mind, you can make more with more work in other countries. Why anyone with skills and drive would stay in that country is beyond me. |

Different strokes for different folks. Those countries that best suit you may be a complete turn off to others for whatever personal or work reasons. Anyway, KSA is in the past for you; you're now teaching in China and presumably working more hours but hitting your financial goals. |

Now I know certain posters are going to have a go at me for this (mentioning no names of course), but, I completely agree with you Hatcher. I've even heard Saudis refer to Westerners as 'money slaves'! so, go figure. |

People on here say they make more in other countries...
"...how could you stay in KSA"
It often sounds like an ego move rather than real advice for others.
If these people were rejected or burned by the Saudis in some way it's not unreasonable to deduct that despite the higher earnings, these individuals make themselves feel better by saying "how could anyone go and stay on Saudi" when in fact, they themselves did just that.
They made their money, no real Saudi friends, and left.
That was the problem. The lack of Saudi friends.
Naturally, because of this lack of connection with the locals, they feel good about having a go at them from other countries saying how much better it is in China or Vietnam, for example.
In reality, they may make less in these countries but since there are vices to distract them (sex, alcohol and drugs) and the money is not bad it seems like it's an overall better offer.
But, if you make Saudi friends AND have a high salary, there's no better place for a saver. But, I doubt saving money is really these people's priority. It seems like they want to MAKE money, rather than save it. Also, they want western standards (toilet, toilet paper, etc..) and they want the rest of it, too.
It's the spoiled Western attitude that travels with them all over the world like emotional baggage.
Taking their grumpiness with them wherever they go. At least in Vietnam they can escape to the expat bar and bad mouth others to feel good about their miserable lives (and how they failed to connect with others).
The failure to connect with KSA, Arabs or Islam play a crucial rule in the success factor of an ESL teacher here.
If members like these actually expressed the truth of their opinions (and fears) vis a vis Saudi people and culture, then a lot would be uncovered.
People say it's because of the laws KSA is unbearable but I think it's because they failed to make nice with the locals. And now make themselves feel better by going to other countries where the locals fall head over feet for them, like Asia for example.
Maybe they should just stay in places where they're automatically liked and popular for being a Westerner. It seems like that should be a statement people make clear about themselves. |

Don't beat yourself up - so many things are beyond all of us.
