I did a Google search and couldn't really find anything. Hopefully this isn't breaking any rules.

I'm wondering how one goes about getting tutoring privates in China.

It doesn't seem to be an easy task at all; quite complicated actually. I live in a first tier city and wanted to make some extra income doing private tutoring, but no one seems to be interested. I asked some Chinese friends of mine for help, even offered to pay them, but they wouldn't or couldn't do anything for me, or didn't know how to find potential clients.

So how do you do it?

Right now might not be the best time of year for most students looking to bone up on their English. you have to realize it's Gao Kao season and most schools are finishing up and getting ready for summer vacation.

That's not to say you can't still find students, but it may take you a bit longer and require more work.

I don't take a lot of private students. I'm busy enough as it is. I currently only have one and he came to me because he knows one of my former students.

Why not make a QQ account if you don't already have one? Set your user name as "English Teacher" and wait. They will come crawling out of the woodwork. Or, (and this is what I do) I just repeatedly ask my friends, and my "good" students if they will keep an ear open for me because I'm looking to tutor new students who need to improve their English. Networking is really the best way, IMO.

Good Luck!

Seconded. It's a bit tricky, the clientele is going to be either rich children looking to improve their English to go abroad, or if you have the experience some students will come for TOEFL/IELTS prep, as long as you are cheaper than a training school asking for 400+ RMB an hour.

As for how to attain some tutoring jobs, advertise yourself on the internet/hand out cards to students or do as the G.A. said and make a secondary QQ account. Be warned though, loads of students are looking for someone to practice their English with on there and/or a BF. Not a good way to make the extra money if they aren't serious, heh! Best for me was people heard of me or they contacted me from a website.

As another poster has mentioned, Gao Kao will be high in the thoughts of high school kids and it doesn't cover oral which is what is sought from foreigners.
You must pass one or two mom and pop language schools on your travels. If you are available over July-August you'll get work there for sure.
Make sure it is within commuting distance of your apartment and you'll have a cruisy summer.
Best

If you are a good teacher and you make a good impression upon your students, word will get out very quickly, and the privates will come to you. Even though extracurricular work may be forbidden, your FAO will probably be your first contact.

Be aware of one thing: if you are a slacker in your official gig and take on private students, that will get out pretty quickly.

If you aren't a good teacher, forget about privates. Word will get out that you're a crummy tutor too.
