Hello,
I just realized the dragon boat festival holiday is approaching next weekend. Does anyone know what the rule/law is regarding foreigners working on national public holidays? My hr dept. at my training center doesn't know, and I would like to know myself if they are required to give us foreign teachers the holiday off or can they make us work it? If possible, please provide a link to a credible source to confirm it?
Thanks,
Aaron |

The most credible source is your contract. Have you checked it? There should be a section in the appendix regarding holidays where you will find something like this (from my university contract):
| Quote: |
| All foreign experts enjoy the same statutory holidays and will be granted the same amount of bonuses as that of Chinese teachers. |
The above doesn't always apply to those people working at training centres however (different work schedules). |

I would be very, very surprised if you had to work, regardless of contract or whatever. It's a national holiday, and therefore compulsory for most people. Training centres will be closed, since no one will turn up for classes, and the Chinese staff will all be given the holiday.
Mind you, given how crowded the streets, shops and beaches are going to be, you might be safer at work. |

The crafty Chinese at university usually give you the day off, then make you work the following weekend to 'compensate' your holiday. Seems fair
It's also very funny when we are told we receive the same bonuses as Chinese teachers. In 4 years at my previous uni I received a combined total of a 200RMB Walmart gift card, a 10Y flykiller, a box of chocolates and that was it. In my new job I was told red envelope totals will exceed 13,500RMB as foreign teachers really are entitled to the same holiday pay as Chinese teachers.
I wonder how many other teachers are suckered into believing they receive fair holiday payments? Then again, what can you do? TIC. The powers that be will deny giving out gifts to the Chinese teachers or claim they receive the same, even though the Chinese teachers will tell you it's a load of poppycock. |
