In a land where nepotism is a way of life, a new high (or will it be a low)?

Surprising Saudi Rises as a Prince Among Princes

By DAVID D. KIRKPATRICK

Prince Mohammed bin Salman, 29, has swiftly accumulated more power than any prince has ever held, and he has become one of Saudi Arabia’s most visible leaders.

It seems that the new king is attempting (rather openly actually) to put his own son at the head of line for when they run out of ibn abdulaziz males. But since the royals conclave (sort of like the Cardinals choosing the new Pope... without the smoke signals) will be the ones who make the decision from behind the scenes, the young man is going to have to prove himself to the whole gang that will be pushing their own sons. Cool Ah to be an Arabic speaking fly on the wall of that conclave...

Or maybe they're trying to get much younger princes to become king because the last few have been quite old. Look at Abdullah and Salman! Comparable age to Queen Liz but look how long she's been in power for in comparison.

All kings have always been sons of Abdul Aziz... all of whom are now elderly. This is all about the current king, Salman, trying to get his son chosen to be the first young King whenever it happens.

It is most definitely NOT about "they" trying to do anything.

It is about one man trying to usurp the power to his son.

Yes and in your haste to get your projected insights across you forgot that it is Mohamed bin Naif who happens to be next in line!

It's still Sudairis, all the way.

The new crown prince, Mohammed bin Nayef, enjoys closer personal ties with U.S. officials than almost any other senior royal, diplomats have said.

He is also a member of the same branch of the royal family as Salman - the Sudairis - which include the present king and descendants of his six full brothers, rather than those of his dozens of half brothers, including his predecessor, King Abdullah, who died in January.

John

Dear Enkates,

So, do you think it's curtains for the Royal Family? Very Happy

Not a chance, they protect the monarchy very well via protection from allies.

Loved the clip... "the curtains" wonderfully silly stuff from that crew.

Even the educated non-royal Saudis are playing the same speculation game as we are, though they naturally wouldn't post about it on a public board. I wonder if they have as much trouble keeping them all straight as we do. LOL I had actually missed the pull-out of Prince Muqrin and replacing him with Prince Nayef's son. I had noticed that the Deputy CP was the son of Salman. And the new Crown Prince is only 55... a mere sprite in Saudi kings... and his bio on Wikipedia only mentions two daughter. The plots thicken. Cool

As JohnS said... keepin' power with those Sudairi boys.
