Hi
I wanted to post this in the ME section but it seems you can only post by country, hence me posting it here.
Basically I am looking for a college/HE level job (not primary or secondary) in the UAE/Qatar/Oman/Bahrain, but a) I don't see that many advertised and b) I have only received 2 replies so far.
SO this leads me to c) how long should I give it until I just decide to apply anywhere in the ME and stop being so fussy ? Is there a cut off date e.g. if I dont get anywhere by end of June, should I apply to other countries not my first choice e.g. Saudi, Kuwait ?
Basically I need to go somewhere for the next academic year, so being stuck jobless is not an option. |

There is a General Middle East board below - probably the best place for this query as not all the ME experts around show up here.
I think that many of the better positions want 2 years of post-MA experience, so if you are 'new' as your forum name indicates, that may be why you're not getting the number of quality inquiries you hope for. |

I've found getting jobs in the UAE very difficult, as they have so many applicants they can be choosy I guess.
Oman and Bahrain don't come up so often, and they're not as well paid as the rest of the Gulf
Qatar can be somewhat picky as well, and most of their jobs seem to be in International schools
Saudi on the other hand... |

Put it this way - I got a very well paid job in Saudi (at great sacrifice) with merely 3 months class experience (but several years private) and only recently officially graduated from university in an unrelated Bachelors and had CELTA for a couple of months.
Saudi just wants to fill spaces and will accept *most* people who have a degree and a relevant TEFL qualification (mostly CELTA) |

I had 2 missed calls on Sunday in the space of 2 minutes from someone in the Middle East - for some reason they didn't leave a message. Great. All I know is it's got a Bahrain dialling code.
Strange they didn't email me though. |

University English foundation year positions in Saudi Arabia --- those that hire directly and not through a contracting company --- are in line with the rest of the Gulf where a TEFL-related MA and 2+ years of relevant experience is required.
In contrast, some higher ed institutions in both Oman and KSA rely heavily on companies to provide additional teaching staff. These positions don't require such stringent qualifications (e.g., Gamajorba's example, which is extreme), nor are the salaries and benefits as good since these for-profit companies act as middlemen. Plus, some companies are rather sketchy. |

Just to further this - the benefits I received were not so great as nomad_soul said. For such a salary, I had to spend 5 hours a day in a car, work very long days, got put in a hotel instead of a compound and time off outside holiday periods had to be covered at an employees expense by another teacher from the same company, despite other teachers from other companies having the same roles but no classes to teach |

I was only ever a passenger as I can't drive at all.
45 mins each way to Al Kharj air base (1.5hrs) and 90 mins (on average) each way to SEU in Riyadh (3hrs on average). Exhausting stuff |

He bitched about it the whole year, but would never get the other 2 guys to drive. Even after a pretty serious car accident! |
