Hello everyone,

I'm a newbie to ESL Cafe forums, and just wanted to drop a quick note to all of you Turkey Board users saying how much I've enjoyed your posts during the past few weeks. I've begun my serious research on TEFL recently, and this is one of the best places to come to find out the scoop on what to expect abroad. From the interesting social customs to information on different cities, the posts have all been entertaining and informative!

So a bit on me: I'm a 20-something female US citizen, still researching TEFL programs and countries in which I could teach. I haven't gotten my certificate, but plan to do so in the next year (probably the summer?). Turkey sounds very interesting and also a likely possibility, since I'm not a citizen of an EU country. I've read what it's like trying to get something in Portugal, which is another place I'd like to be, and it sounds virtually impossible if you're not from the EU.

Anyway, I am still confused over whether I should get a CELTA or just opt for the cheaper generic TEFL certificate. I know having a CELTA is important for Europe, but since Turkey isn't quite yet in the EU, is it still very important? Or does that matter, if you can get a job with either? Any suggestions as to which courses are better than others? Does studying for your certificate in the area heighten your chances of finding a position in that area?

Ok, enough questions for now. I thank you all in advance, and look forward to becoming part of the community! Feel free to post any information about Turkey or the process of getting certified that you might think is helpful... I'm sure it will be!

In order to be legal here you need a teaching cert. so I would recommend that you get one. There is an RSA course run here. if you need any info on it let me know

There's a CELTA course in Izmir in July.

RSA and Trinity are both widely accepted here. You also need a degree, preferably in either English or teaching.
