I have recently been offered 21,000 (after tax) a month to teach in Suzhou. I also have a separate flat allowance. How much could I expect to save from this as a single person? Thanks! |

Regardless the amount of the salary offered, this is essentially an un-answerable question.
How much I can save from an income of "X" in the city "Y", versus how much my neighbor in the same city can save, versus how much YOU can save, are probably all quite a bit different.
Some people spend money like it was going out of style, some save the same way. No matter how much you have, if you're a "spender", it's easy to do. If you're a "saver", then that's easy too. Luckily, I'm a "saver". |

At the most you could save 19,000 a month,... at the least, nothing. Depends on your personal expenses and tastes. Suzhou is a pretty cosmopolitan city, loads of interesting aka expensive things to spend your money on.... kind of a mini Shanghai in that respect. Crazy to live like a hermit in such a place - go to the all-the-eye-fillet-steak-you can eat buffets, go to the shoting ranges, drink margaritas until you vomit etc. On that salary might as well enjoy yourself. |

If the 'flat allowance' is 2000 and the cost of a flat is 15000 - then you're not going to save much.
There are so many other factors at work that the question is pretty well nonsensical. |

Not sure if it is a nonsensical question or not. However, I have no idea of the cost of living in Suzhou, and so have no idea of the cost of food, public transport etc etc. I am not particularly into the latest gadgets and nor am I particularly interested in eating in expensive restaurants. Nevertheless, I do take your point that it depends on the person!
How does the cost of living compare to such places as Bangkok, London etc? |

Your best point of reference is other teachers at your new school.
If you haven't asked to be put in touch with these (past or present) then that's a bigger red flag than CoL. |

How much trouble would it be for these places to prepare a simple one page fact sheet for incoming foreign teachers listing common prices and giving a few facts about the area? Which they could then email to people applying for a job |

21k RMB is more than enough to save in Suzhou. You could easily save $1500-$2000 a month if you wanted.
I can't imagine there's a lot to splurge on in Suzhou, unless you plan on taking weekend trips to Shanghai.
Are you working at an international school? Where did you find your job? |
