From reading here it seems the best time to search for work in colombia is either may/jun or october/November. Id like to complete a CELTA before going to medellin and looking for work, the problem is the part time course i want to take ends December 5. Is that a little too close to holiday time to find work? I would probably accept work at an institute, but i was hoping to come at he peak time to look for work at a university. I also have a couple of years of experience in Korea.

I don't know about teaching in Medellin specifically, but EAFIT, for example ends classes for undergrads on Nov 14, so coming after Dec 4 sounds too late http://www.eafit.edu.co/admisiones/calendario-general/Paginas/calendario-vigente-pregrados-2015.aspx
They start late January, so waiting until after the break would be cutting it close.

I don't know if you're taking a part-time CELTA course for financial reasons to be able to work during the course, but there is a full-time CELTA course in Medellin November 9-December 4, So if you could go a week earlier than that you could at least get your foot in the door, and get contact names and schedules etc though you wouldn't have a completed CELTA on your resume yet. Then you'd have Colombia contacts from doing the CELTA course in Colombia.

Actually, I'm taking the part time course for health reasons, not financial ones (part or full time, either way I would need to pay the course up front). I can't sit for long periods, so signing up for a full time schedule of mostly sitting is not going to work for me. On the off chance that my condition gets better september (not likely), I would take the course in Medellin, but it seems like I may have to stay here for another 2 or 3 months after the end of the course and try in February/March.

The CELTA isn't necessary to teach in Colombia, if you're planning on making a career out of ESL, it's a wise investment, if it's just something you plan on doing for a few months to a year it's really not worth the 2,000 or so you have to pay for it.

Everything in Colombia is completely dead in December as far as work goes. Everyone goes on vacation for pretty much the entire month. Work really doesn't start back up again full swing until late Feb/ early March.
