I believe it's an international criminal check for Aussies....well it should be
Job ads I see say local police check. There is no finger print for USA local checks and they literally only cover crimes in that town. So, if you murdered someone in one town you just need to go to a neighboring town for a background check. Just make sure it has a stamp on it. Preferably a red one! |

It depends on the requirements of the jurisdiction in which the school you are replying to is located. More and more are requiring a national check.
For Americans, this can make a huge difference as an FBI check takes about 4 months and shows everything no matter how trivial. The current Chinese regulation is stated and seemingly always enforced that anything on your record will disqualify you.
There has also been talk that China will soon do genetic testing of foreigners for undesirable traits such as inherent criminal behavior. This of course would disqualify you along with all your compatriots.
But for now, just find out from the school and make sure they know what they are talking about. Regulations have been changing with most jurisdictions getting tougher in this requirement and a few getting looser. Chinese schools and local officials can be reactive to these changes with your butt getting burned as the way they learn about said changes. All the best on it! |

My last federal Aussie check only took two weeks to process, and you can just order it online. My American wife, on the other hand, has to go through a Kafkaesque bureaucratic nightmare of a process to get hers. |

It does seem to vary by province, but the majority if not all now require a police clearance certificate.
A new hire from Australia at my school had a local check which was declined so he had to get a federal check. I believe he did it online as was mentioned.
Its simpler to assume that one is required and obtain the highest level one then you are covered if something changes later down the track. |
