|
|
Hello everyone:
I was also thinking about getting a job in Saudi. I have a bachelors in Social Science, a Masters in Education (Curriculum and Instruction), 2 years experience in Poland teaching English and 2 years teaching in Japan (on JET) not to mention substitute teaching in America. Any thoughts on the chances of getting a job (single male with no bills/attachments of any kind).
Be Genki

Your chances of getting a job are pretty well 100% How much you will get paid is another matter. |

hello:
Well, what is 'average' for the area (and how much is enough considering the safety factors)?

There's quite a range, actually. The average for universities is low-30s plus housing, airfare, medical, and dependents' school allowance. You can go fifteen grand above that or ten below it, depending on where you work, your family status, experience, etc.
The safety issue is a personal thing. How much is your life worth to you? How much would it take to get you into a friendly little game of Russian Roulette right now? I'd say take that figure and multiply it by the number of days you plan to be in KSA...

Have you got rocks in your head or something?
Well if you are looking for an adventure i suppose Riyadh should provide that for you.
Good luck. |

Riyadh provides plenty of things, but adventure is not one of them - unless you think experiencing catatonia is exciting.
MInd you, compared to Jubail Riyadh is exciting! |

Does anyone know anything about Jublai College? They are constantly advertising (which makes me suspicious anyway). I have not read here anything about them. |

You're smart to be suspicious. They've advertised DAILY for over a year!
They offered me a job there in '97 for more than what they're offering now (US2200-3000).
That salary range has been pretty much constant for years, notwithstanding the current threat level there. I'm convinced that two things will survive a nuclear attack -- roaches and the Jubail Industrial College (JIC) salary structure!
When I worked for another employer in Jubail, I used to drive by JIC every morning. I'd see the teachers there walking across the busy boulevard from their housing area (NOT a compound, by the way) to the college. The ones I saw didn't look very happy, but then you can't judge by appearances!
Jubail isn't a bad place for westerners. It's just over an hour from Khobar and the Al-Rashid Mall, and about two hours from Bahrain. One bad aspect is the smell of burning petrochemical by-products in the air. |

Not for me - I love the smell of napalm in the morning.

I am responsible for the initial stages of recruiting for Jubail Industrial College.
We have a permanent ad up; it's much too much hassle to do anything else than pay per year.
The reason we do is that the college has been expanding; we now have about 45 English teachers and are slated to have about 60 by next August.
Turnover is generally low. This year three people left, one to get a better paying job in Saudi. There may well be some who don't come back after the holiday, but I don't know yet.
The salary scale is fixed by the government, and depends on how much accredited experience you have. There may be temporary 10% increase for Brits to compensate for the fall of the dollar, but don't quote me on it. The maximum starting salary is up to SR12,800 for those with oodles of experience. |

SR12800 = $3413
That's surprising, considering the ad at tefl.com consistently lists $2200-$3000 (as of today). |

The body of the ad says
Quote: |
Basic Salary: The salary scale, inclusive of a SR600 transport allowance, is on a scale that goes from SR8,015 for candidates with an MA and two years accredited teaching experience or a BA and four years experience,up to SR12,817 for candidates with an MA and ten years accredited experience or a BA and twelve years experience. |
The $2,200 - $3,000 was in the summary. I have now altered the figure. Could you PM me if the correct one doesn't show up tomorrow.
Thanks for letting me know. |

It's showing the correct maximum now.
Well, I stand corrected. The salary scale changed. The roaches will have to go it alone! |

The salary scale hasn't changed. It's just that they have upped the limit for starting staff, so those with say twenty years experience now get twelve counted instead of nine. |
