|

Hi all,
I have a student who really wants to teach English, but she's having issues in finding English teaching jobs because many countries don't recognize her country (India) as having "native speakers" despite them having learned English from a young age. What advice could you give? Do you know of any countries who wouldn't have a problem with Indian passport holders? Any help would be greatly appreciated! |

There are lots of Indians teaching English in many different countries. Typically in Saudi Arabia salaries will be lower for those with Indian passports. Some jobs will not hire unless you have a "Western" passport. Grossly unfair. I have met many Indian and Pakistani teachers of English who are miles ahead of the competition.
The best bet might be with the likes of the International Indian School in Jeddah. Who knows, maybe you need contacts to get in there. |

As Scot47 pointed out, there are many qualified Indians teaching in the Gulf. But it really depends on her qualifications --- if she has a TEFL-related degree (preferably an MA), valid TEFL cert, and some experience. If she doesn't at least hold a relevant degree and/or TEFL qualification, then that's what she should address first. |

If she is still in India, is an English speaker with minimal qualifications beyond a degree then her chances are effectively "0" due to visa issues.
She WILL NEED proof of proficiency (IELTS, TOEFL, TOEIC) as a visa requirement a visa for many countries.
If she has relevant post grad credentials (publications are a plus) then it will be difficult but not impossible. Her accent and racial prejudice will be issues to contend with as well as the financial burden of getting out of India.

Your friend needs to put his/her CV on www.seriousteachers.com There is no way he could make the same amount of money that a native speaker will make however he most likely will get a job. He will need to start thumbing through job offers in the locality that he wants to work, because I think for some reason his CV along with his picture gets connected to the employers in that region on that web site. |
