They want your original copy of the degree now instead of a scan. Very annoying if you didn't bring it with you. Apparently it is done to filter out the unqualified people, but who knows if it is actually going to do anything else besides annoy everyone. Food for thought! Er.. discuss stuff!

Don't they know about notarising?
Hell mine's in a frame and would probably disintegrate if I removed it.

I thought that was always the case.

Didn't you always need to bring in a physical copy of your degree when applying for a work visa at the Chinese consulates/embassies back home?

My local Embassy is close by and I took the thing in its frame.

As far as I know, the consulate has always required a copy of the original as well as a cashier's check to pay for it all when one applies for a visa from his home country. At one time, it even required the degree to be apostilled by the Chinese government and one's home government as well.

Here in Zhuhai, Guangdong, I've had to give the original certificate both times I've made a new application (as opposed to a renewal). So have other teachers I know of. I brought it with me, it's a piece of paper after all, not difficult to transport.

Before anyone jumps in with how valuable/irreplaceable it is, so's your passport, but you brought that with you. Besides, you can get a copy form your university, or at least you should be able to. Is it really such a big deal that the authorities want to see the original of an important document? Would an employer in the west be happy with an easily fakeable photocopy or scan?

Wait. I need to backpedal. It has been awhile since I went through the application process from home. The school / recruiter accepted the scan, sent it to the Ministry of Whatever who issued the letter of invitation that I submitted to my local home country consulate.

So now they're back to requiring an original, and the OP is in China with just a scan and (presumably) applying for a job in-country.

This is why I come on this forum. Sometimes there are genuinely some very interesting threads that can save you a LOT of headaches further down the line.

Thanks for sharing this.

I sent a scan on mine in the last go around. Got my diploma kicking around in my apartment somewhere, will dig it out when I need it.

And to be sure, not a surprising move at all. The number of diplomas I fabricated for my school when I was a manager, quite the sizable number. I wonder how long it'll be before notarization or an apostile is needed?

Confused as I have been here 7 years and never shown anyone the original.

Yeah, I never though the day would come when they'd require it. I don't know how they'll manage to tell whether it is legitimate or not, some sort of monocle they'll pull out? Costed me 150 bucks to fly that and my other papers over here from Canada. I got the person from my school taking care of the visa to try again but the people at the visa office were firm on requiring the original, and my old company told me the same thing. Good luck to the others going through this! And bring your stuff with you if you're visiting home right now and/or coming to China and are reading this.

Just out of interest, why are you leaving Chengdu? It sounded like you had a very nice thing going on there. Surely not for the air quality Shocked
