I'm an Aussie currently living in China and am sick to death of life here。 I
have a current AFP criminal check with me but do I need to get it apostilled or notarised for Vietnam (to work as an EFL teacher)? Also, can I enter Vietnam on a one-way ticket as a tourist (and work later on)? I'm sorry if these questions have been asked before but I'd like to know if the above scenarios have worked out for anyone recently. |

How current is it? I forget the exact specifications but I think Vietnam it has to be no less than 3 or 6 months old. Otherwise you're going to have to investigate if you can have someone take the check for you. Make sure it's notarized.
You do not need an apostille for any documents you notarize as Vietnam is not party to that part of the Hague Convention.
** I HAVE NOT LIVED IN VIETNAM FOR THE PAST YEAR SO THE BELOW INFORMATION MAY BE OUTDATED**
Also, try to find some full time work that will process your documents into a work permit if at all possible. Otherwise you're stuck doing visa runs to Cambodia or wherever. |

The last I heard, you can still get it notarised at an embassy in Vietnam. It doesn't need an apostille. I've never been asked to show an onward flight by immigration authorities in Vietnam, but most airlines won't allow you to fly unless you show them an onward ticket. It's easy to circumnavigate, though; just edit one of your past itineraries and change the dates and departure/destination. You'll need to leave the country if you want to get a work visa later on.
Are you really sure Vietnam is where you want to go? The work conditions and benefits are terrible in Vietnam compared to many jobs in China. It really would be taking a step backwards in your career. Admittedly, though, you'll probably enjoy your social life more in Vietnam (maybe!). Perhaps a new and very different city in China would change your spirits. Just a thought |

If your police check is outdated, the AFP will send it to an overseas address. I received mine in the mail in Vietnam one week after I got an email saying it was completed (yes, I'm Australian). I did this just a few months ago. |
