|
|
Greetings!
My name is Denise and I have been considering teaching abroad for some time. I'm finally ready to fulfill my wanderlust, but am overwhelmed by all the different options to get certified and get a job. I have a BA in psychology and anthropology and over 5 years teaching experience. However, I do not have my TEFL cert. I am looking for affordable options to earn a job in Vietnam or Thailand, preferably. Any guidance would be appreciated!
Thanks,
Denise |

Getting certified and completing a TEFL certificate are two different things --- I assume you're referring to the latter.
It's unclear what you mean by affordable, but CELTA or SIT TESOL are your best options; they're widely recognized. Check out their websites to see when these courses are available in your state and in any of the countries you want to teach in. Additionally, some generic TEFL cert courses meet the requirement for valid teacher training (120 hours of in-class instruction with 6 hours of supervised/assessed teaching practice with a class of real students). Again, check out what's being offered in your target countries as an option for training overseas.
Definitely head to the Asia forums for specific job-related info. |

For LEGAL (defined as having a proper visa and work permits) work as a teacher in SE Asia you will require:
passport from a correct country (typically UK, Ire, USA, Can, Aus and NZ)
Degree (original) + university issued transcripts
Police check with "no record found"
A TEFL cert, while nice to have, is NOT a requirement. (A degree is).
For work in the region it is strongly suggested that you get a tourist visa, fly in, get the lay of the land and THEN look for work. It is strongly suggested that you NOT find work while you are still sitting in your living room in your home country.
AFTER you find work you can pop into a neighboring country and visit a consulate to obtain the correct visa.
