|
|
We frequently get questions about alternative teaching licensure programs, and affordable graduate degrees. I came across word of this program locally, and found it interesting enough that I wanted to pass it along to others who might be at that point in their lives. The amount of the stipend isn't specified, but for other Americorps programs that I've seen in the Boston area, the stipend has been in the $13,000 to $16,000 range.

There are similar programs like these around the US. The best ones completely cover the cost of your MA degree, and simply garnish your wages a small amount until it is paid off. You will be working as a full time teacher while studying (at night). I did the NY City Teaching Fellows Program this way and earned an MA through the City University of New York.
These programs exist in different cities with the most popular programs being Teach for America or Teaching Fellows. Americorps tends to partner with these programs to cover or help supplement your school tuition.
Another avenue I came across was the Peacecorps program in which you can study a free masters either concurrently while doing your service or after you have finished your 2 year service.
There are also generous grants and student loan forgiveness programs for army vets I believe. |

Also Licensure at University of Massachusetts Boston is inexpensive? $30,000 for 2015/2016. Would that even cover the summer? It takes two semesters and a summer to usually gain the classes required for licensure.

The total tuition costs under this program appear to be around $1,500. (Tuition of $7,200 less Americorps grant of $5,730.) From the Boston Teachers' Residency website:
"What is the cost of the master’s degree from UMass Boston?
BTR has contracted with UMass Boston such that all BTR Residents (regardless of in-state or out-of-state residency) receive a discounted rate on tuition. Beginning in 2013-14, course tuition will be $600/course, or a total of $7,200 in course tuition. As enrolled graduate students, Residents may apply for student loans, which can cover the cost of tuition, and which can later be paid back in part using the AmeriCorps Education Award of $5,730 received at the end of the Residency year."
