|
|
Hi all.
I've been teaching English in South Korea for close to 7 years now. It's time make a move and put some real money away.
I have a BA that is not english related. I'm currently working on a 150hr online TEFL cert(no classroom portion) and teaching experience with children aged 5-15.
Does this qualify me to teach english in Saudi Arabia? If so, would I be able to compete for a job?
I'm also wondering what sort teaching job and renumeration package I should expect if I do actually qualify(salary, housing, bonuses, etc....)
Thanks all. I've found info online, but none of it was real specific. |

Be aware that online degrees and certs aren't recognized by the Saudi government. You'd need to have a CELTA/equivalent in-class TEFL, and preferably, experience teaching adults.
For qualifications and salary ranges, check out current employment ads for KSA on the Cafe's job board and other TEFL job sites. |

No CELTA or equivalent condemns you to work for the nastier employers. |

Actually, even the nastier employers require a CELTA or equivalent now. |

Are you breathing? Do you have a pulse? Okay, then you're in.
Seriously though, to the OP don't believe everything about what people say you may or may not need to get a job here.
At first you may have to work for a crappy job, but once you've been here a couple of years and got to know a few people, other options appear.
IMO experience counts for a lot, and who you know.
Qualifications aren't always everything.
Sometimes it''s just a case of being in the right place at the right time. |

The OP specifically wants a well-paid job. An unrelated BA + online TEFL + 7 years teaching Korean kiddies isn't going to achieve that.
Probably most earning potential is to stay in Korea. |

The streets of Jeddah, Riyadh and Dammam are no longer paved with gold.
OP might get SAR 10,000 a month ? |

Yeah, the OP should forget about improving his/her qualifications and instead, focus on getting to know EdEx, QEHC, and the like. |

I'll clarify that a bit for you. What I meant was that it can be worth doing a couple of years in KSA on a low salary so that you can get to know a few people in country and have the chance to get something much better.
To give a couple of examples:
I know one guy who had an unrelated degree + CELTA, 2 years in China and 3 years in KSA who went to BAE Systems in Dammam on 25k+ a month, compound, schooling etc.
Another guy with an unrelated degree + TESOL doubled his salary going to work for the military.
These might be in the minority, but that doesn't mean that it doesn't happen. So I stand by what I said that getting to know people in country can make a big difference to what jobs are available.
Of course, if you stay in your room every night moaning, then networking chances will be limited. |

UH.......OR the OP could spend a couple of years elsewhere upgrading his qualifications and qualify for better jobs in the Kingdom from the start.
And then s/he'd have qualifications that would be useful anywhere/everywhere on top.
I know what course of action I'd choose |

Aside from your statement that the OP should ignore everyone's comments but your own, you're still missing the point that he/she will have an online TEFL cert to go with their unrelated BA. That combination isn't likely to get the OP any teaching job in KSA since the Saudi government does not accept online qualifications. It's odd that you're completely unaware of this requirement. So your contention that the OP only needs to have a pulse and some Linkedin friends is poor advice. |

My apologies, didn't see about the online TEFL.
It's not about ignoring everyone else, but I'm just saying that nothing is set in stone.
I wasn't talking about a Linkedin contact, more like someone you actually know and socialise with.
Sorry if I think differently to you. |

Dear bigdurian,
Nothing wrong in thinking differently from others. So, are you in a position to hire the OP, or can you direct the OP to employers who will offer jobs to someone with those qualifications?
Regards,
John |

Possibly yes, if the guy had an in class TESOL. Which he doesn't. So probably no.
Nothing is written, I'm a big believer in that. We make our own way in this world.
