This is particularly relevant for American teachers in China. For those who go the Hong Kong route, they get a tourist visa in Hong Kong, then return to Hong Kong for a work visa, then go to their local PSB for a resident permit - 3 pages on the same passport for one job.

U.S. Citizens: After December 31, 2015, the Department of State will no longer add extra visa pages to U.S. passports. U.S. citizens applying for passports outside of the United States will receive 52-page passport books. The 52-page passport book will cost the same as 28-page passport book would. Renew your passport early to make sure you have enough blank pages for visa stamps from other countries. Some countries require two blank pages for their entry and exit stamps. |

Overall, I don't think this is too bad as the extra pages appended were often not accepted by foreign governments. Plus the cost was almost the same. Biggest hassle is having to submit both passports for certain visas etc.
As a Yank, what I find more troubling is...
1. That I requested a large passport but was given like 42 pages. Why? I am on my fourth (though the second met an untimely demise in a washing machine) passport so they must know I suffer from Wanderlust and need the largest passport available.
2. Why send my my old passport separately like three weeks later? I know it takes three weeks to punch a hold on it and stamp it as invalid but...Could it be that you are adding all my countries visited into your Big Brother database?
3. Have you read about the battle over the new passport application process that has been raging for some years? The more Nazi like factions originally proposed that it should be like 85 pages long and include such important questions as to list with current contact information all the people present in the hospital room when you were born. Last I read it was down to 29 pages. It would take months to complete and thousands of dollars in research. Hmm.. |
