Hey guys,
I'm looking for the latest on getting an online/credit card criminal background check. I'll skip the details on how my prepartion in the States went bust with a school here.
The best solution would be a pdf result that I could use for Imi here in VTN.

I know some people have had success with the online route that is then taken to the US consulate for a statement attesting that the documents are legitimate. The problem is I have a very thin connection to things in the States at this point.

I'm wondering if someone can point me to a specific site that will definately get the job done.

I know people are well intended but in another forum, I got responses like, "shouldn't be a problem", "my friend had no problem", "just google it" etc...there are a myriad of sites that offer one background check or another, I'd like to avoid paying for a casino version of background checks for time and money's sake.

Thanks for any specific ideas and feel free to PM me if you want to keep it kinda quiet for some reason!

Regards,
tideout

The paid websites that offer criminal background checks have never worked for me. I tried a few of them.

Finally, I found my State's sheriff department website would email a check directly to me. I got this sent as a PDF file and printed it off and have had no problems with it.

It has a nice, fancy looking sheriff's department seal on it which most Vietnamese officials seem to love.

Nice. Do you think it would even matter if you'd lived in that particular area? I'd be happy to go with a known winner of it didn't matter to anyone else.

Again feel free to pm me if it makes any difference.

I think you have to do it through the sheriff's department of the state which holds your driver's license, but I'm not sure about that. You could check your state's sheriff's department website, and if they don't have the same option for you, I;ll send you a PM with the state I used.

Wrong agency --- sheriffs handle law enforcement within their specific counties.

For state records, first check with your city police department. However, it's likely that you'll be referred to your state's bureau of investigation, the state's equivalent of the FBI. Do an Internet search on [your state] criminal background report. Requirements can vary from state to state.

nomad soul : I had a back and forth with you on a similar issue before. I think from your perspective in the Middle East you see this as a black/white issue while in VN it is all grey. What matters is not what is correct but what the authorities like. It could probably come from your next door neighbor as long as it has an official looking stamp.

More seriously it is unfortunate that the US embassy/consulate is not more cooperative on assisting with FBI checks. They could start with doing the requisite fingerprinting. The State Dept. site says "U.S. embassies and consulates do not generally provide this service." From that wording, I assume that they could if they chose to. Since, as I understand it, we now need a home country check for a Work Permit even if in VN for more than 6 months, the need is even greater. The FBI has a downloadable fingerprint form that you can send with the application but they are pretty picky about how the prints are done. Does anyone know of any private agency that could do the prints properly?

Yes, Vietnam is the geo-political equivalent of Fifty shades of gray.

It seems that every person I've talked with there's a different variation on it.
I recently attended an info meeting on this and it looked like people had made up some of their paper work from a mediocre power point slide. People can be understandably quiet about their procedure even if it's successful.

South Korea by contrast was pretty clear on the paperwork side.

I digress a bit... I agree that what looks good goes pretty far.

I've got a couple of possibilities but will keep an eye on the ideas that come up on the board here and may come back for more options.

Couldn't agree more on more help with this from the embassy. Much of what's needed isn't complicated but could makes considerably better.
