Hello guys and gals. I was thinking about some possible places to travel during one of the holidays during the year. A big reason I cam to Saudi was as a launching pad to see the world, and indeed for the long summer holidays it does seem we are in a prime launching ground to go anywhere in Europe, Asia, or Africa.
But what about the shorter holidays? Does anyone have an recommendations for places within four or five hours by plane, and good for about four or five days? |

Egypt... Jordan... Oman... India... Iran... Turkey...
Really this list is endless and depends on your interests and travel goals.

Well, that's a given that it's personalized. But for the sake of discussion....
Is Jordan nice? I'm interested in going there, but it does look a little bit dull. Like it doesn't have lots of personality, as compared to Lebanon or Turkey. Did you find that to be the case? |

No recommendations, but under 4.5 hours from KSA:
Italy, Uzbekistan, Azerbaijan, Cyprus, Macedonia, Croatia, Malta, Bulgaria, Greece, Turkey, Armenia, Ethiopia, Kenya, Tanzania...
No one knows your personal likes/dislikes, special interests, budget, travel dates, etc., so research potential destinations on sites like Lonely Planet and Trip Advisor to see what fits. |

Jordan is full of personalities and has great tourist destinations: Petra, camping in Wadi Rum, Aqaba and the Dead Sea Spas and in the north there is Jerash. There is a lot to do in one small country: history, diving and natural beauty; and the Jordanians are very welcoming for the most part. Although the trip from Amman to Petra does take a couple hours.
Sri Lanka has a lot to offer, too. |

Well I haven't even arrived yet, but since I'm excited for all the travel I'll be doing, I hope I can answer the places I want to go.
I'm hoping to take a bog trip every summer and a small trip every winter. For the smaller trips I certainly want to go to Lebanon. It looks really hip with lots of old ruins. I also really want to visit Iran, but as I'm an American citizen that might be complicated. But doable, I think.
Also I think some Mediterranean islands are pretty quick flights. Places like Rohdes (sp), Malta, and Santorini. There are some great deals for Santorini on AirBnb. You can stay in a place overlooking the beach for like 500US for a fortnight. |

I visited Jordan in February and it was wonderful. Petra is really an amazing place, there's so much to see there. It's not a cheap destination but if you're working in Saudi you can afford it. Also if you visit the Dead Sea or Aqaba you can tell your students you saw Israel (from a distance).
Americans, Canadians and I think British too these days need to book a tour to enter Iran. I thought about doing it but it didn't really work out with my schedule at the time. However, the prices seemed reasonable.
Iraqi Kurdistan is a real off the beaten path destination but I have to admit there's not much of interest here for tourists.
I loved Ethiopia when I visited. Wonderful climate, very cheap, interesting sites. I just wish I had more time. |

Somalia and Yemen are great winter destinations. I had good times in both places. |

I suspect that someone may be trying to mislead the newbies with the present tense verb?
They both were in the past... sad times for their current citizens...

Socotra Island, off the coast of Yemen, is still a potential tourist spot for those who like quiet beaches, diverse landscapes, and funky plant life. Getting there could be tricky. |
