Basically with McDs here in Japan getting clobbered, their stranglehold on fast food may be ending. Coupled with other chains wanting to get back in ala Wendy's or in here in general like Taco Bell. Do you see any chains coming here and having success?

I don't pretend to hate MCD, but it isn't all that great, I could use a better burger chain to go to when I crave a burger.

What do you think? Esp since MCD's quality control in garbage these days.

I personally don't eat fast food, mainly since I used to be over 300lbs and now am around 200lbs haha but MCD is pretty bad. My sister used to work there when she was in HS and she always got sick from dealing with their poor quality of food. She didn't eat it mind you, just dealt with it. I don't think Japan will be at a loss with losing them other than the jobs being lost.

Maku isn't going anywhere. Even small cities have douzens of them lying around, half could close down and the company would still have a larger presence than any other fast food company here.

There are a few Burger Kings around these days (if you live in a big city, there may be one).

Other than that, you might want to look into Freshness Burger. More expensive and takes a lot longer than Mac, but way better.

(both Burger King and Freshness Burger sell beer, too [Burger King is cans, Freshness Burger on tap]).

ETA: Obviously, there's Mos Burger, as well. (small portions, a bit more expensive than Mac, but better).

I wouldn't say that small cities have dozens, but even small towns have em.

A larger presence, by all means, yes MC will, but they may leave a vacuum for other companies to come in.

Yes, BK is here, but outside of Tokyo proper(my province has 5 of them), they are hard to come by. Besides, BK never really made anything all that much better than MC. Just my opinion, but BK is pretty much MC in a different flavor. Ala coke vs pepsi.

Frenshness Burger is def pretty good, but they are pretty rare still. I want a burger place that I don't have to commute to. I live in Tokyo's inner suburbs too!

Moss Burger! Man, they have good fish burgers, but their reg burgers are pretty bad. Probably because they use a beef/pork mix. Which kinda shows how cheap they are. Sorry but burgers aren't pork mixed.

Small cities, small towns, big villages, city and town don't even translate into Japanese properly, the point I was trying to make is that they're everywhere.

I see far more of them here than I have in any other country, admittedly I've never been to America.

OK, makes sense. Yes, the US has plenty of McDs on the ground. I would say more so per capita than Japan. Though Japan does have quite a lot of McDs.

I would still like to see some other fast food/fast casuals come in. I do like Japanese food, but it does get old after a while. As the menu choices here are much more limited that what I had in the US.

Yea totally agree. As much as I do like it, it does get kind of boring. Everywhere served the same sterile looking dishes.

I went to a gyu-don place today. Really isn't any diff than McDs. Bland cheapish fare.

And all of the big three serve pretty much the same thing for a similar price. Good for a quick and cheap bite, though!

Then walk around your neighborhood and take a look to see what's there. Maybe there's something good. Maybe there's something appalling.

McDonalds is pretty good when they have the Limited Edition XL Burgers. Same goes for Burger King with their Limited Edition whopper and cologne combo.

KFC is something to stay away from.

But I think the greatest burger is probably ''The Great Burger'' Address: Japan, 〒150-0001 Tokyo, Shibuya, 神宮前6-12-5.

Also milkshakes, and accompanying fries are delicious as well.

https://www.shakeshack.com/2015/02/17/shake-shack-is-tokyo-bound-in-2016/

Good news, burger lovers: SHAKE SHACK. Looks good. Here go the burger ratngs:
Wendy's is best. Wet, fresh, good pickles. Good sides! No accounting for taste as there is but ONE in this country...TWO? Out in the sticks forget it! Used to be a nice sprinkling of them all over 2005 or so...the hot wings! OY!
BK? OK. Onion rings, smoky grill flavored meat. Custom burgers.
Freshness: First get to JP? BLAND, yuck. Been here a while, hit the nice condiments rack there. Purdy dern good, guys.
Mos? Just throwing money away.
McD: The Texas burger was fair enough but with this sad current menu, nothing served after 10.30AM goes in THIS tumtum. Muffins and breakfasts but only on hangover days. Delivery is tipping point.
Now, the little boutique joints...that can be AWESOME!
And going on youtube to get a simple diced onion, egg and ketchup burger mix with the needed ingreedies is something you have GOT to try...don't forget the garlic powder.
Meat
Fine diced onion
Egg whipped
Salt/Pep/Garlic powder/paprika, sqirt some ketchup or worcestershire sauce in the meat mix.
Make patties with all above. Slide in fridge an hour covered plastic wrap. Fry up.
Top with bacon slices cooked earlier. (I know "bacon" here can only be found at meat guy jp. Hold bacon in place with 2 slices cheese, cover gently with foil, bringing heat down a notch to melt chz then slide onto bread or bun.
Condiments and there you are.

I thought McD's was better in Japan than it was in the US - a lot more of the food was made to order. Sometimes the guy who made the burger (can't really call him a chef, can you) would even come out and present it to me with a little bow. You don't see that in the States. They just yell "order #69!"

But I usually avoided McD's unless it was the only option or I was in a hurry. As others have mentioned, there're so many burger places in Japan (Tokyo especially) that outshine McD's. Maybe that's why they're having trouble selling burgers.
