Hi,

I have a visa renewal question: I have been told that it takes up to 15 working days for a work permit to be renewed. I was wondering if anyone has had it done quicker or if it is possible to expedite the process if necessary?

As always in China it depends where you are and on various other factors.

Generally, at least seven working days for straightforward renewal once it is handed into your local PSB. In some instances it can be longer but the time you have been quoted is a good average.

Is there some reason why you need it expedited? If you need to travel you will be given a receipt in lieu of your passport but trying to use it is sometimes futile as most Chinese don't understand what it is.

He's talking about his foreign expert certificate, and no it can't be expedited.

If so then my mistake.

To process an FEC application is taking 10 working days in my province, no matter whether it is a new application or renewal. All the applications are online now and we have to wait for a response before we can even go to the SAFEA office, this is marginally slowing things down as at peak times there is a backlog of applications.

The renewal of the resident permit which will happen after the FEC is as I posted earlier.

I was told 10 working days for a new FEC (I moved provinces), but in the end they had it ready to collect after 3 working days.

As with a lot of things here, go in with the minimum of expectations. If they say 15 working days, then don't expect it to be finished until 4.45pm on the 15th working day. That way you're not left disappointed / frustrated / ranting about how useless Chinese administration is.

If anything, you'll be pleasantly surprised if / when it comes back early.
