I know I posted before on this board but I should have been more specific. Does anyone have any experience with a recruiter called TeachingNomad? Offers jobs in China and the Middle East?

Using a domain name that ends in .org or .cn is an indication of a shady organization? What should a biona fide legitimate recruiter's url end in?

Not having a published street address on its website is another indication? I've never seen a street address on a KNOWN, legitimate recruiter's website.

Won't provide a copy of a Chinese business license upon demand? Show me one that will.

Advertise jobs that pay less than 10,000 rmb per month? Most public universities pay less than 10,000 rmb per month.

Not members of the BBB? Come on. Most American companies don't belong to the BBB. Membership has no advantage to the business owner other than authorization to use its logo. The BBB is a shady organization itself.

Tell you that your China employer must hold your passport for a 3-6 month probationary period. Sounds shady, but I've never heard substantiated reports of it.

Sure a lot of the content on the referenced website is shady behavior, but surely isn't typical recruiter behavior.

What's your agenda here?

My agenda is I wanted to know a) if anyone on these boards got a job through Teaching Nomad and if so, b) what was their experience. Full stop.

And I haven't a clue who or what CTFU is supposed to be. Or CFTU for that matter.

The post to which I referred took numerous pot shots at Teaching Nomad. I addressed them in defense of the recruiter although I have never done business with Teaching Nomad. (Then the RU Serious post was taken down).

Recruiters get blamed for crummy placements in part because the schools fail to provide them with adequate information. As a result, newbies arrive at schools that are nothing short of H3ll on Earth. The recruiter catches the blame. Schools have more to hide than the recruiters do.

Read as much as you can about many recruiters. provide the recruiter with all necessary paperwork (including passport scan with number blocked out) so you can receive copies of contracts and job descriptions so you can compare offerings.

Give it a shot.

I worked with Teaching Nomad before, although it didn't end up with me getting a job. If you are a quality applicant, they will assign you a person to work with you.

I was very specific with my job request, and they did their best to hook me up with a position in my niche, but I turned the offer down.

Overall, I think they're pretty OK as a recruiter, but just keep in mind every recruiter has the same mission -- get you to sign the dotted line.
