Hello all!

I'm exploring the ESL job market in China and wanted to know what kind of positions and at what kind of schools pay the most? I have about 2 years teaching experience in Spain, a TEFL certificate, and this year, I'll be teaching in Korea. Since Korea's job market and salaries are pretty stagnant, I'm researching where I can make more money in the ESL sector since, I have loans to pay and need to SAVE...LOTS! My ideal position would look like the following:

-salary of 2,500 to 3,000 USD
-free housing
-airfare paid for
-medical insurance
-bonus

Is this too much to ask for or is it feasible? If so, how difficult is it to obtain?

Your expertise is much appreciated!

What happened to your plan to get a CELTA/equivalent (in class) TEFL cert and subsequently, head to KSA?

If you want a high paying job in China, then don't go to Korea. Come to China, take an entry level job and get your boots on the ground. That way you can do interviews and demo classes. It will make a world of difference in your job search, trust me.

With your qualifications and experience, I would say it would be very difficult to reach that kind of salary with one employer / position in China.

If you want to get to that level of income, your chances would be much better by finding a uni position with low hours and then boosting your income with private teaching jobs on the side (see the experiences of some other teachers in my 'tutoring' thread). Bear in mind that it will take time / effort to build up your income from privates AND you have to be willing to work hard.

@Nomad Soul: That is definitely the plan, but just in case, I want to have a back up! I'm definitely taking the in class CELTA because I have an online TEFL. By the way, are you in KSA yet? If so, how is it?

Where can positions at unis be found?[/quote]

Been there, done that. I'm no longer in KSA; I left in 2013.

Here's what my path was. In the above description.

I'm currently in china and found a gig by deciding to get in at entry level in a big company. So, I took a 2000 usd job and after 6 months, I was given another teaching position with them in another section that made more, so now I'm on 3000 a month. Still just teaching. Mind you, it's 10.5 months and no bonus, but the rest of the list was there. Besides that, living in China is super cheap. I save 5000 usd every 3 months.

Hope that's helpful. Good luck.

Thank you for your post! Did you find this position on Dave's ESL Cafe? Any one have recommendations for specific websites?

My situation is similar to that of Merging Traffic. The only difference is that it took me a year at a time to move up the pay scale. All of my positions have come from referrals except for the first one. I got my foot in the door before anyone else applied.
