This is probably most relevant to your British subscribers but others may find it helpful as guardian.co.uk has a wide selection of TEFL jobs.
I draw your attention to the advert for the job in Taiwan at "Rich English", with the luringly high sterling salary. It's a gross misrepresentation of the truth. The school "management" have worked out an exchange rate of 50NT to the pound. You will see that there are currently 61 so your salary in NT will actually be around 20% lower than you thought it would be in sterling. In all fairness, the whole thing's a con. Yes - it's a good local salary but don't go to the other side of the world thinking you'll pay off that student loan and save - you won't! Furthermore, it is such an unbearable place to work in. The couple "running" the place are two of the nastiest people I've ever met. They know nothing about teaching, management or the needs of normal human beings. 6 days a week of shouting at kids whilst the parents and management monitor your every move is not worth any salary. Any experienced teacher will be appalled by the unbelievably low standards in teaching.
I really regret the mistake I made, which was the worst experience of my life. I told myself to think of the money but when I realised I wasn't making what had been advertised, I knew that working at Rich English was 100% fruitless. Avoid this school like the plague and teach these morons that proper teachers must be taken seriously and treated fairly! |
