I have lived in Tokyo for many years. I am contemplating a move to Osaka. I think Tokyo people are cold and have disrespectful manners when commuting (Yokohama people are even worse). I have heard much more positive things about Osaka people. They're warmer and more open to making friends.
But what's it like to work and live in Osaka compared with Tokyo? Salaries, work styles, food, nightlife, anything? |

You make less money.
You have to hustle for work more.
But it is less crowded.
I am thinking of retiring in Kansai.
My spouse is moving to Osaka this summer, and I will go to the US, get a job, place to live, etc.

I never worked in Tokyo while I was living in Japan, but I’d visited there several times, and yeah, it did have a colder, more reserved feel to it. I lived near Himeji and visited friends in Kobe and Osaka all the time. I did like Kansai better.
I think nightlife is probably about the same, though maybe it depends on what you do. They do karaoke in Osaka, too, if that’s what you’re wondering. Food…yeah, great food in Osaka. Think I remember them being known for their style of okonomiyaki…perhaps among other things. (Even if they weren't known for it, I still liked it.) Ramen and yakitori were great, too…same as in Tokyo, so no losses there.
If you’re getting the itch and feel like changing, and you find a good position, then…maybe go for it. |

You will save money on rent and food.
For food if you go to a cheaper discount place like Tamade, then you really save.
You can find places with no key money.
I think it is less stressful since it is less crowded.
People aren't stuck up like many in Tokyo are.
People talk to strangers on the train and at public bathhouses. |
