Hello,
I am writing again on behalf of a former colleague (Ph.D., American passport) who told me of a job offer at ZU in Abu Dhabi. Is 18000 dhs + paid housing + paid health insurance and annual RT acceptable? This is somewhat less than what many of us were earning at HCT in 2009 but as we know, there has been considerable downsizing all over the Gulf (but increased hours).
I know nothing about the cost of living in A.D. or type of accommodations for married individuals with Ph.D. and previous Gulf experience. Can anyone respond asap? Decision must be made within the week. Thank you much.
Feel free to PM.
Happy Holidays, safe travels and blue skies to you.

If the salary offered for an Assistant Professor position, then it is low.
Assistant Professor should get at least 24000 DHS plus other benefits. |

A key factor... is s/he being offered provided housing and a settling in allowance? Or just a housing allowance and has to pay all expenses to set up a flat?
That said, with the job market as it is for PhD's in the US these days, $5000 tax free may be appealing enough.

It's hard to say since salary depends on the position, the person's doctoral focus/major, and his/her relevant experience. |

Has ZU gone to housing allowances or are they still providing the flat?

The last I heard one could take a flat or the housing allowance. Most folks prefer the "bird in the hand", since you can see the flat, whereas the rental market can send anybody for a loop, as the market does fluctuate year by year. It is a good question to ask. These things change quickly. Since the original question was, “Where do ZU staff get housed”, I just listed some of the current options. In any case, if the rent exceeds what ZU wishes to pay, they move you out to cheaper digs. I suppose my point is that ZU staff generally get decent housing. You won't get a villa on Saadiate, but you will get a comfortable, modern, legal flat.
Here’s another place where ZU staff have been housed:
