I am a US citizen currently working in Taiwan and would like to get an ORIGINAL copy of a criminal background check without returning to the US. Is this possible, and if it is, how do I do this? I may have something lined up in Vietnam. |

It may depend on your country/city police department but, I just granted power of attorney to a friend of mine overseas (be sure to get an affadavit at your local consulate/embassy) and they got and delivered it to me.
Just make sure the mail is registered properly and you should have no trouble.
Good luck! |

Thanks. I know it may be expensive, but are there third parties that can do this, for an FBI check? I don't really know many people that live in the last place that I lived in the US. |

I wouldn't know any off the top of my head.
I had something like this happen to me in Hanoi, where I needed to have my diploma retrieved and sent to Spain from the embassy. This despite knowing only a very small number of people there.
I realized I was Facebook friends with an expat who happened to be there and, on a crapshoot, just asked politely. To my pleasant surprise, they were more than happy to deliver it and I sent money to them via paypal with a little extra for them to buy a nice dinner.
Sometimes it is just that easy. |

There are three problems with an FBI check but they are not insurmountable. The first is fingerprinting is required. You can download a form and do you own but getting them right could be tough. The second is that they will only send the check to a US address. Your description of your situation is a little confusing but apparently this could be a problem for you. The third is that in big red letters on their website, they warn us that a check takes 13-15 weeks plus mailing time. That's weeks, not days.
The FBI also has a list of what they call Channelers. https://www.fbi.gov/about-us/cjis/identity-history-summary-checks/list-of-fbi-approved-channelers The drawback would be that the checks they provide are not physical but maybe they can be printed out and notarized at the US consulate/embassy in VN. If you choose to go this route, I would be curious how it works out for you. |

Except, unless something really dramatically changed in the past few years, a criminal background from your local city/county/state police department is more than enough compared to the more cumbersome FBI check. |

Just out of curiosity, I did a little checking about getting an online check in my own state, Hawaii. I found that it costs $5 to see it and $15 to get the pdf. The document states Name, gender, partial Social Security, partial DOB, a statement of convictions (hopefully none) and a disclaimer that the document only reflect Hawaii court records. I don't know if every state has something similar but it seems likely. If not, just get one from Hawaii, print it out and have it notarized at the consulate. Aloha!
I looked at my WP application forms (from 2013) and couldn't find any place on the forms that asked for prior residence. There were two lines that asked for place of work experience both in and outside of Vietnam but mine were left blank. I think these are only used by applicants using experience in place of a degree. |

Yes, I was able to get one online from my state as well. I know some states offer this service while others don't. I wonder if it would be useful to compile a list of which states do. |

As I am on Christmas vacation from school without much to do, I did just that. I posted it as a separate topic as it was rather long. Hopefully it will prove useful. |

I'm curious about this as well! At the moment, I'm completing my TEFL in Spain so I haven't applied for any jobs yet. However when I'm accepted for a position; I'm a bit worried about the need to go back to the U.S. to do anything. I can't afford to go back for a few months to wait for an FBI background check and get apostilled copies of my degree and certificate.
In fact, can any of you verify if a state wide background check is acceptable for a job in Vietnam? I'm finding conflicting information regarding this. Will schools accept an apostilled copy of my degree and transcripts? The apostille is good forever, but some countries will only accept documents for a certain number of months. I'm awaiting replied from a few schools regarding this.
Thanks! |
