Hi all
So I have been looking for jobs in China for some time and was offered a solid position. One that I was very happy with. I submitted everything required and then was told to wait processing.
However, I just received an email telling me that the government requires that I have a TESOL, TEFL, or CELTA certificate, which I do not. I am a PhD candidate in a related field with several years of teaching experience. They've tried to say that my experience outweighs that need. However, the hiring uni informed me that the government is adamant on such a certificate. They asked if I could obtain one within the next month or as soon as possible - even if by "irregular" means. They have heard from other teachers that this could be obtained in short notice, but didn't specify how.
I am a bit at a loss here and would really appreciate some input. This seemed like a great position, especially compared to the others that I came across and now I am at a bit of a loss as to what to do.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you |

By "irregular" they mean photoshop. If you're in Shanghai, I know a place that offers a TESOL course for cheap, but outside of China it's basically worthless. |

Thanks for your reply. I'm not currently in China at the moment. Is there anyway I can get this "certificate" over the Internet? |

You may have to do one of the many online courses available, which will teach you nothing, but provide you with a certificate at the end. Go for the shortest one you can find and you'll likely be able to complete it in a week or so.
This is a valuable lesson about life in China in some ways. Bureaucracy is everything here. You'll come across people all the time that have certificates and diplomas saying they can do things that they simply can't do. You'll find your students are obsessed with passing exams in order to get the piece of paper but retain very little of what you teach them after that. You'll work for schools that care nothing about the quality of your submitted teaching material but will return it to you because you used the wrong font or didn't fill in every box on the form. You'll be dealing with people who have memorised the steps required to get from A to B, and who simply cannot process anything that deviates from those steps, even if it's a better route. |

Or just print out a blank one from google.com and fill it out or take it to a printery and get your name stencilled onto it. The chinese don't care so why should you? |

If you want to be dishonest - photoshop one out.
If you want to be honest - just do a 60 hour online course - it will probably take you less than a week to get through. |

They want some sort of "accredited" certificate. If anyone can recommend anything quick, cheap, and easy, or any other alternative means, please let me know. |

They have obviously not given you enough time to do anything decent (CELTA or equivalent) so your only option is to do an online cert. They are 'accredited' in the sense that they have a logo that says as much, though it doesn't really mean anything. That might be enough to satisfy your employers, I don't know, but like I said it's not really feasible for you to get a proper cert in the timeframe you've been given. |
