Yet more evidence of the decline in the quality of gallup... now pretty much useless results. LOL

It depends on what "happiness" means in each country and culture.
What is "happiness" in the Magic Kingdom may be is "misery" in the United Kingdom?

"The findings suggest that either people have different perceptions of what "happiness" means, or that material wealth, ideological freedom and civil stability do not necessarily translate into personal contentedness."

With absurd results like this, they probably only polled Saudi princes.

Possible the results are skewed for the KSA. It's in no way a normal country. I wonder if you could adjust for a culture that is socially lobotomized.

This poll doesn´t surprise me at all. I thought the young men I taught there always seemed very content. Their aspirations in life were easily attainable and there was a nice atmosphere of solidarity among them.
My boss told me that while KSA was backward in many ways they were light years in front of us in social skills.

LOL. That's the most humorous thing I've ever heard about the Saudis. Social skills, my butt. Ignorance is bliss is more like it.

Given the choice of teaching male Saudis aged 18-25 and Brits of the same age, I know what I would choose !

It is very hard to poll residents of the Middle East. This was part of my research classes at AUC related to having survey questions with our thesis. There is a social tendency to "please the questioner" so you tell him what you think he wants to hear. They don't tend to think in terms of what their real answer is.

Anyone who has ever asked directions in this part of the world knows what it is like. Everyone will say they know the way and send you off... even though most won't have a clue where you want to go. I remember trying to find this famous cafe in Alexandria Egypt. It took almost 2 hours... and when we started we were within a half block. And this was with an Egyptian asking other Egyptians. Laughing
