This is a bit of a stupid question I'm afraid, but when employers or visa authorities ask for an official seal, what exactly do they want? I have always assumed it is a stamp from the organisation/institute, but the party I'm dealing abroad with seem to think otherwise.... |

You don't give any context, but generally it means original (and often sealed) documents from the applicant's university or some government entity. It might also refer to an original or copy of a document bearing a notary seal from the issuing party.
If you're ever unsure, get clarification from the office requesting it. |

It can also be a vague term for an apostille or legalisation. |

In my case it is a seal from a hospital - I guess the hospital or doctor's surgery stamp should do? |

The hospital stamp and a signature should be OK. Otherwise, it might have to be trial and error until you find out what they want. |
