I always thought he was rather smug. Couldn't imagine him teaching English; too much TTT. Jimmy Young was even worse (showing my age here). |

That's often the trouble with those modern radio presenters. You can't beat a good Lord Haw Haw for witty banter. |

A good English teacher should have a love of language and everything related to it, and as such our Tel should be remembered for being a great wordsmith. Him, and Les Dawson. |

That is an unfair and unnecessary comment. |

It is a reflection of how much I loathe and detest the BBC Establishment. I am not alone, |

I tend not to look at the politics, rather the output. That is the fairer measure of an institution. However, this is a thread paying tribute to the recently departed Terry Wogan, which still therefore makes such comments inappropriate. |

"The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing."
"The Children in Need host recalled a celebrity lunch with journalists revealing that it was common knowledge in the industry what Savile was up to.
“I was sitting at a table having lunch and Savile was sitting one up from me, and also up from me was Jean Rook (the legendary columnist)
“And Jimmy Savile got up to go to the loo, and she looked across at me and said: ‘When are they going to expose him?’
And I said ‘that’s your job.’ And nobody ever did, even though everyone had heard the rumours."
Not in his job description, apparently.

John |

I'm sorry, but I don't see why you are all so obsessed with Savile on a thread about a decent, and recently departed man. What is the connection? Can we get back on track? |

Dear Phil_k,
It probably shows that you're a better man than I in that you don't find Sir Wogan's lack of concern and responsibility at all disturbing.

John |

Always good to have a sauce [sic].

Quote: |
Sir Terry Wogan has told how widespread rumours about Jimmy Savile used to sweep the BBC but nobody did anything about them.
The Children in Need host said he feared the Savile saga had "poisoned" the BBC's reputation. Describing him as talentless, he agreed Savile was "creepy", adding: "I've talked to people and not one has said: 'I really liked him.' " |
I'm not sure how you'd handle such a situation, John, based on what were at the time rumours. Unfortunately, victims hadn't been taken seriously by the police while Saville was alive, so I'm not sure what Terry Wogan should have done about it. He was right too that the press could've investigated Saville as these people have the right skills and more importantly lawyers. |

One reason that people don't do anything; they have skeletons in their own cupboards!
Not suggesting that's the case with Wogan though |

Dear John
You are missing the point.
a) As others have pointed out, Wogan is in no way culpable.
b) The point of this thread is to pay tribute to someone who by and large was loved by colleagues and viewers alike, not to bring up an unsavo(u)ry subject, which in any case has no resolution as the subject of the accusations is now dead and was never brought to trial.
c) You are a better man than I if you have no skeletons in your closet and are qualified to judge someone's actions without full knowledge of the facts available at the time. Hindsight is a wonderful thing.
and
d) If you are using someone's knighthood with a shortened title, the correct address is "Sir [firstname]", not "Sir [surname]".
Regards
Phil |
