As a British born Chinese graduate in Finance with no direct teaching experience/qualifications, is it possible to get into teaching in Hong Kong? What would your next steps be for someone with no direct teaching experience or relevant teaching qualifications?

From my own research, I’m looking at the CELTA/TESOL qualification as of my next step but I wasn’t sure if this was a must requirement, or if I’m better off applying for jobs without it.

I am also currently abroad which I heard you really need to be in Hong Kong to be even considered, is this true? I'd prefer to have something setup before heading over as I am financially restricted.

Any advice/opinions would be great, Thank you

If you have the right to work in HK and your English is native and you will find work. Now, without qualifications and experience it's most likely that any position you find will be VERY entry level and working conditions won't be great. Expect long working hours, a crappy teaching environment, no to little support and low pay.

A CELTA / TESOL qualification will make you eligible for better positions. I'd highly recommend that you get some form of teaching qualification.

In answer to your other question, yes it's much easier to secure a teaching position when you are in HK. This is especially true for new / inexperienced teachers. From what I've seen recently, the only people who have been able to get jobs remotely are those who are highly qualified / experienced or those who have specialist skills which are in high demand.
