For me it would depend on whether I had to stay a night in Hong Kong or could cross the border same day. How much luggage would you have to carry across Hong Kong and then to Shenzhen? Would your school be happy to collect you from the Shenzhen crossing? figure out the cost of a night in Hong Kong plus the fare to the border and see if it still works out cheaper. |

If you knew the route well I would say take the cheaper flight, if not save yourself the headache, depending on how different the price of course. |

As long as the flight is when the subway is still running I think you could go from the airport to Luohu crossing without much trouble. I went to HK the other way around, From inside China to SZ airport, then to Luohu into HK, then reversed that. Not sure about traveling from the HK airport, but I assume there is a subway that does the trip (an assumption that could be wrong and hopefully someone can comment on). |

I agree with wangdaning, you can get to Shenzhen (Futian by bus/train, Louhu by subway or Nanshan by ferry) from Hong Kong. I got to Guangzhou by bus from Hong Kong airport; from memory there was a direct bus (in 2014 when I lived there) from Hong Kong airport to Futian district, Shenzhen (it stops at places like the Convention centre). The cheapest way seems to be via subway however I guess it depends on whether you could be bothered carrying your bags around (the wait at Louhu immigration in person on the mainland China side can be a while on some days). |

I also forgot to mention as you may know already flight options/prices are much better to Hong Kong (or Guangzhou) than direct to Shenzhen (I'm not sure why, it must be something to do with airline taxes or code share agreements between airlines/airports). |

Book cheaper flight to Hong Kong, maybe arrive earlier in the day so you have leeway to figure out the subway system. Nevertheless, it should be pretty simple. |

It's about £500 return to Hong Kong and more expensive to Shenzen from the UK. |

Try Guangzhou because it's China Eastern's hub, everything goes through there.
Also I don't think there are direct flights from London to Shenzhen but there will be to GZ. Adding in another flight can add up, from GZ you could train to SZ.
If the school has a Guangdong person on staff going to GZ shouldn't be a big hassle and will save on perhaps having to get some weird visa to Hong Kong for the staff member. |
