First of all let me apologize if this question has already been asked: I did do a search but was unable to find any definitive answers.

My wife and I have been teaching English in Asia for 11 years. She prefers teaching kids while I have been teaching adults at an International Trade Institute. We are University educated, have TEFL / TESOL qualifications and both hold Canadian passports. However, I can apply for a UK passport as I was born in England and lived there for 17 years before emigrating.

We are both very interested in working in Spain and wondering if it is possible for us to do with our Canadian passports?

Would it be better for me to get my UK passport? If I did would it be possible for my wife to also work in Spain - perhaps on a spousal visa or something similar?

Thanks everyone.

You will need to apply for and use your UK passport to work in Spain. There are a few extremely limited exceptions, but you will definitely want your UK passport. I don't know what Spain's process is for spousal work permits, but others probably will.

Steps:

1. Get UK passport.
2. Wife has right to work in Spain as partner of EU citizen. May take a few months to process her work visa, but she'll get it eventually.
3. ???
4. Profit.

OK - Thanks. That's about what we were thinking; good to have it clarified and confirmed. Are there many adult teaching jobs available? I have ZERO interest in teaching ankle-biters and booger-pickers.

In big cities there is lots of in-company work. I was warned before starting work in Madrid that everybody had to teach some children. It turned out that was rubbish.

Good.

Been there. Done it (for about 6 years in China and Taiwan) and have no desire to ever do it again.

I worked in a provincial city in the north of Spain and was told before going that a full time schedule without teaching kids would be impossible. Utter tosh: I was offered two jobs on my first day (one of which was at a university) neither of which involved kids.
