I've been through Gansu while travelling back from Xinjiang and I have to say I was actually surprised at how much I liked it.
It's really remote, and oddly shaped geographically, but Lanzhou was surprisingly interesting enough to spend a few days in. It seems like a big enough city to where you wouldn't get too bored easily.
The Hui people make incredible food, by the way. |

I can only speak for the city in Gansu i am at.
People - Friendly, less conniving, gossip a lot (yes, but this is common all
over china)
Men - tacky dressers (again, common), polite - will say a lot of things and
give you the roundabouts only to mean they like you
Women - fabulous dressers, some are quite friendly but some can be
bitchy (like the mother dog) too... careful.
My City - very clean, mid-sized, dies at 12 midnight, nothing much really
going for a city life seeker. oh, almost forgot, it boasts the
northwest end of the Great Wall (Jiayu Pass).
Weather - (here) being near Gobi desert, the place is quite windy...okay,
its very windy during spring (gawd, how my skin suffered during that
time), not as hot as south China during summer and could reach to -20-
25 degrees celcius during winter (brrr.) Winter is one of the reasons i'm
thinking of moving out of here.
Food - taste great, cheap
Prices - surprisingly, quite higher than other major cities, especially
clothes which are not that great but one doesn't have much
choice, so....
Students - they're not the model for sainthood but far more respectful
than those in bigger cities. (correct me if i'm wrong).
School, Teachers, Administration - varies, I can't generalize.
Hope these help (haha, i got around the *beep* this time) |

Thank-you very much for your help.
By the way what are the basic conditions you should be asking for in this area?
I get the sense there is a dearth of ESL teachers there. |

My City - very clean |
LanZhou is one of the most heavily polluted cities in China - even the locals recognise this (partly due to it's geography.)
Gansu is dirt poor - one of the poorest provinces in China.
It has terribly cold winters, well below zero, as well as hot (but not especially humid) summers.
This doesn't mean you won't like teaching there of course.
Do a search for "Gansu" and see what you come up with.
Best of luck.
