Any advice for approaching phonics with a larger group? It will be approx. 16 children about 8 years old. One upper group for 30 minutes and then a lower group for 30 minutes. I have taught them already in small groups of 8 so I know their ability and what not. When I have taught phonics in the past it has always been in smaller groups so I have usually based it round a story but the numbers here are too large for that...also the school doesn't want me tackling stories in this section (as they do that during the 30 minutes they aren't with me).
The weakest students in the upper level will at worst be very comfortable with reading CVC words and at best be native like in terms of reading skills. The lower level will range from zero to simple CVC words.
My rough plan at the moment is:
- start with a song or video to introduce the sound in an engaging way
- use PowerPoint to work through some chances to practice the sound, read it in words, read it in sentences etc, perhaps some identify the sound activities (this section perhaps not appropriate for the lower level)
- a worksheet to be completed in pairs or groups
- online phonics game to end (the changeover will be staggered so need something like this that can be dragged out or ended abruptly with minimal fuss)
tl:dr Any suggestions for specific large group activities that lend themselves well to phonics? |
