After doing research, I have a major concern that my criminal record (possession of Marijuana) may affect my ability to obtain a work visa in many countries.
I know south Korea is out of the question. I have received mixed reviews about china. Any information, ideas, or suggestions are appreciated.
thanks! |
A drug charge will be cause for automatic rejection in most countries that seek an FBI check as part of the visa process including but certainly not limited to China, Vietnam, Thailand, Korea, Indonesia.
It will also be an application killer for internationally accredited schools that require background checks as part of the vetting process (even before it gets to the visa stage).
You'd be far less likely to have problems in Latin America or perhaps eastern Europe.
(slightly off-topic but as an FYI, simple possession or use, in SE Asia, can get you 3-6 years in a local prison and you can be charged based on the results of a simple pee-test required based on "association". Your US "freedoms" don't travel with you and your embassy can't help you).

Any drug charge would also be an automatic rejection in Ecuador as well. |

Criminal background checks are also required for the Middle East. |

As far as I'm aware, only the bigger cities in China require a CBC at the moment. You could get a job in a smaller place/backwater in china... no doubt.
Just apply for some jobs, and before you interview with a school, ask what documents they would need for your visa. If they don't mention a CBC, you're golden.
It's ridiculous that carrying such a beautiful plant can preclude you from working in a school for your entire life, but I guess that's a topic for another thread |

I've heard of people getting their records expunged so it doesn't show on checks, but I don't know the details. |

Thanks for all the replies everyone!
I've also heard that sometimes a state background check is sufficient. If this is the case, I would be ok because the incident occurred in another state.
Has anybody gotten a visa by using a state background check in stead of an fbi background check?
Thanks again everyone! |
