Hi Everyone,

As I was re-doing my resume/CV, I realized how many different types of English there were.

Everything from ESL, EFL, vocational English, to the English literature and language analysis that us native speakers did when we were in high school.

Is there a directory (preferably free and online) I could reference to find out?

I am guessing I am not the first person who has been confused by this terminology. Can anyone help?

Most of the terms you mention are just variations on a theme.

Basically you have TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages) and variations in teaching based on:
context (in an anglophone country or a non-anglophone country),
purpose (vocational, academic, other specific purposes), and
    proficiency.

Everything else is just pomposity.
If you want more nuances then use "google scholar"

Thanks. I wonder what the most common theme is.

Curious how you are teaching a class without knowing what the term is! Smile

I teach the class because each school assigns you books, curriculum, etc.

I am trying hard to get to the "pure truth" of what the heck the terminology is called.

ESL, EFL, EAL always wig me out. I guess for everyone, it is an acquired language, it just depends on if you have any prior background which determines you as a native speaker or other speaker.

Acronyms are what they are and every industry is full of them. CAT scans (computerized axial tomography), MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) or MRE (Meal, Ready to Eat)... EAL, ESL, EFL, TEFL, TESOL, TESL, CBLT, CLIL... pick a list.

It has nothing to do with being a "native speaker" but more to do with your related background and training (or lack thereof as the case may be).

It's odd you're having issues with these terms since you've referred to yourself as an education researcher in other threads. Confused

It would appear the OP is yet another time-wasting troll. If you are teaching in any class anywhere, you should know whether it is English Literature, EFL, EAL, EAP....

All you have to do is google the acronym.
