I'm a CELTA certified teacher with a degree from Canada. I'm currently teaching ESL in Vancouver, and I'm moving to China soon.
I've done a ton of research on the subject, but I figure I'd ask the online ESL community which recruiting company has served them best.
So far, I've contacted Golden Staffing and New Life ESL.
Any recommendations would be awesome.

I don't trust recruiting agencies here so much. The best way is to come over and you will land a job easily! With better conditions than any agency could offer.
Certificates, degrees could help but are not essential to find a good job. Everything depends on your interview and demo class that you need to deliver.
Talking about Shanghai...not sure about other cities tho. |

After the OP comes over on a tourist visa and finds a job, should he go to HK for a Z visa or return home and go through the usual steps?

Wow, what horrible advice.
To the OP, many recruiters are shady, yes, but some do have decent jobs. A couple I have come across that tend to have higher-level jobs are Redbrick Education and ICN Teach and Travel. They have international school jobs and some nice private school ones too.
If they offer you a position, do all the due diligence before accepting, and I don't see why you'd be falling into any kind of trap. |

Does a CELTA mean much to a true international school?
My info is that they still require home country registration and classroom exp. |

Recruiters get a bad rep, but if you don't have any contacts in the field who can help you recruiters can be useful.
As long as you 1. ALWAYS do your homework and 2. NEVER pay the recruiter then in theory ANY recruiter can be acceptable.
You could try Horizon ESL, TeachAway, or Footprints. Just remember that recruiters are trying to place you. They don't personally know everyone they are working for. Tons of crappy employers go to recruiters for exactly that reason - they're crappy and no one wants to work there. |
