Hello,
I heard the the IELTS exam will now be computer based. Do you guys know if the speaking and writing sections will also be done on the computer? Will examiners no longer administer the speaking test? I appreciate any info you may have.

Rumors have it that you still have to do the speaking part in person. But other people told me you may have to record it on the computer just like in TOEFL.

I guess the butt council is trying to save money and I foresee that they are going to be canning people in the future. All computer based testing = less employees.

Well, IDP are already getting the written part of the test marked online (at a cheaper rate) according to this article...

http://www.theaustralian.com.au/higher-education/ielts-examiners-may-lose-jobs-as--marking-goes-online/news-story/d9b295cab081c1767a60c7af37d2a842

There's always going to be a need for a human element somewhere along the line for marking speaking and writing, but I'm sure if IELTS can find cheaper ways of doing things then they will.

If examining were my full-time job, I'd perhaps have a contingency plan...

I've heard about that as well, though not sure how it would work. Your link didn't link to anything readable. I don't see how doing it online would cut down on anything except the admin costs. If they have to be marked properly it would still take the same time online. I guess they could try and sell it to examiners as being in a more convenieent format that they can do at home and use that as an excuse to pay them a lower rate. The only other way to cut costs would be to compromise on examiner quality and training, which would undermine why the IELTS test is a better indicator than multiple choice tests.

Yep, found the article as it's exactly what I predicted. they're marketing it as more technologically efficient and convenient for the testers, nothing to do with cost cutting . They won't get paid less but some examiners might see 'remuneration changes.' Rolling Eyes

They might find they get what they pay for and examiners will spend the amount of time marking under the new system that will pay them the same per hour as the old one.

People who examine (a large percentage), and the BC deserve one another.

Deplorable characters.

Computer-based IELTS was first introduced back in 2005, but it is only available for academic modules at selected centres. It has the same questions and the uses the same criteria as the paper-based exam.

The Reading and Listening are computer-based. The Writing is at the preference of the candidate - you can choose paper-based or computer-based. The Speaking will remain face-to-face with one examiner.

The benefits of taking the computer-based exam are faster and easier access to the results on-line, a set of headphones for the listening exam and being able to edit answers on-screen during the test.

Candidates need to check with the examining centre to establish whether computer-based facilities are available.
