Does anyone know if there is much ESL work in Boulder, Colorado? Compared to say, LA and NY?
Many thanks if anyone has a thought on this. |

Uh, this is the general Africa forum.
Try the General North America Forum instead. |

Beautiful spot. Really enjoyed visiting that place. It is right next to the Rocky Mountain National Park. |

After reading Stephen King's The Stand, I doubt I'm a Boulder type. Much nicer weather in Vegas anyway. |

Boulder attracts people who want to ski.
Nevada gets more sun but has a brutal summer.
More teaching jobs in Nevada, by the way. |

Since you asked about Colorado, check out this ESL directory for a list of US providers. |

There's always part-time ESL work to be had in and near Boulder, as is the case elsewhere on Colorado's Front Range. Boulder is a small town in comparison to LA and NY, so I'm sure you'd find quite a bit more work in those locations. Unless you have family or friends willing to rent to you, you won't be able to afford to live in Boulder on an ESL salary, even if you do manage to land something full-time. If working in Colorado is your ultimate goal, you'd do well to consider any opportunities that might be available along the Front Range--basically everything between Fort Collins and Colorado Springs. Boulder is really, truly a great place to live but, alas, just not doable on an ESL instructor's salary. |

Nice catch.. How much would you save after rent, food and tax, though? Boulder is pretty expensive. But, doing it for nine months would be okay.. |

If you're willing to work summers, that would net you an extra $10,000 or so per year. But even with that, you'd likely be living in Longmont or Broomfield or, perhaps, even further afield. Unless you have roommates or a spouse/partner with a second income, it would be difficult to live in Boulder on this salary. |

IEC Boulder is a nice place to teach. I taught there for three years. There is some lower cost housing available in the 700/mo range as part of the university housing system but you have to look for it. As an IEC employee, you will be considered University of Colorado faculty as part of their Division of COntinuing Education. Also, if you are willing to have a basement apartment, you can get lower cost housing. In general, you might have to live outside of town. Boulder has a food bank which allows you to get low cost/free food any day of the week, and I was able to negotiate with my local market to get fish heads for soup free or at a low cost. You cannot beat it for the trails and parks and an environment for getting exercise and training.
THe old ESL pioneers who have taught there for many years may be retiring, plus the institute appears to be expanding. |
