Hi,
I'm 60 years old, a frequent tourist of Thailand and I'm thinking about going into semi-retirement there.
I've applied to a few schools but am considering just moving there for a couple of months and looking for part time of full time work on the ground.
I'm particularly interested in Chiang Mai.
Any advice. |

Hi Capricorny,
If your visa is sorted (i.e. a retirement visa) then what about looking at online teaching/conversational lessons? There are advertisements for these sort of gigs on Dave's. From what I've seen they commonly pay anywhere from $10 to $20 US, depending on your qualifications/experience and the type of lessons you are doing. You can set your own hours, work from home and the pay is competitive for Thailand. Anyway, just a thought.

Plenty of EFL teachers have semi-retired and retired in Chiang Mai....at 60 you are better off looking for teaching work in ISAAN or Pattaya where age discrimination is not so rough... |

I'm on a Retirement Extension in CM. Not allowed to work on it, and haven't seen anything that would tempt me to change it to a B Visa. People are actually paying to volunteer here. Wages are less than they were 10+ years ago. I agree with the above statement bout Isaan being a better place to seek work. I'm early 50s, and age discrimination is rampant. Of course, they know they can get away with more BS on a 23 yo. There are still many working with fake degrees, and a number of foreigners with Thai kids, and teaching is the only way for them to stay; there is a lot of desperation on their part. |
