Finish my degree in May 2016. Was deciding where to teach and where to do my CELTA before that. I fancy SE Asia and the money seems a bit better in Vietnam than Thailand. Can I do a CELTA in Vietnam? If so, any recommendations? Also, how much money is recommended to have in my bank account if I am just flying out there and plan to do the CELTA there and stay there to look for teaching jobs?
Thanks,
Ray. |

I'd say to have enough for at least 3 months of living. 1 month for the CELTA course 1 month waiting for your first paycheck. 1 month safety net for things like if the CELTA course gets delayed or you don't find work right away after completing it.
It's also good to have enough cash for an exit plan, and you'll have to do at least 1 visa run after 3 months anyways. |

Yes. CELTA training is offered in both Saigon/Ho Chi Minh City and Hanoi. I'd recommend doing the CELTA in the city that you want to live in. If you want to go outside those cities then there are no CELTA training centers available and employment opportunities are much more limited. It used to be (and probably still is), if you proved yourself during the CELTA and the language school liked you, then, providing they had the spots, they would offer you a job straight after completing the course. That's not a guarantee, but, if it does happen then it can make life easier. I did my CELTA through Language Link in Hanoi and I got offered a job with them after finishing, but, I knocked it back as I knew there were positions coming up at ACET. Six of my CELTA class mates ended up taking jobs with Language Link though. Also, don't forget, the CELTA course is a month-long, you will get to know your class mates well and many of them will be sticking around. It's always nice to have a number of people you can hang out with when you first arrive in a new place and that's another reason why I think it's good to do the course where you want to live.
So, if it were me, I'd find out where I wanted to live, Google to find out who offers CELTA programs in that city, research the selection as if they were potential employers and make your decision on who to go with based on that. You may also have to take into account the dates when they are offering courses.

After paying for the CELTA, I'd recommend having about 5,000 USD. Others will say that you can do it for less, and they'd be right, but if you have access to that then it should be a relatively 'stress free' introduction to Vietnam. Good luck! |

Thanks for the speedy replies guys. Much appreciated. I'm thinking of taking out a £4000 loan then and just heading out there once I apply and get accepted for the CELTA. Will just pay that back monthly I'm sure it will be worth it though! I had a quick look and saw a CELTA place called Apollo in Hanoi. Anyone heard about them before? |

Apollo are one of the biggest language schools in Hanoi. If you like Hanoi, then they are as good a choice as any for CELTA training. The CELTA program is very heavily regulated from Cambridge so the course itself doesn't change regardless of where you go. As to what your individual experience will be like, the wild cards will be the instructors, who is in your class and, to an extent, the students you are given. You might get people you like, you might not, but you won't find out until you get there...... |
