I was just thinking how back in North America, you were a rarity if you didn't buy lotto tickets often. The convenience stores rely on selling them to survive (along with cigarettes and beer). TV ads always announced upcoming big jackpots. People at work formed lotto pools.
I don't see this kind of lotto mania in Japan. Is it just a North American thing? |

I think you may have something, there. Then again, if someone is looking to gamble, why wait for the lotto draw? They can just pop into one of the many pachinko parlors. |

They do. They have the Big 6 and other lotteries. They are sold separately from other products. They have their own kiosks.
Japanese people never seem to be the type to go in for a lotto pool. So I see why they never do that.
They do have the lottery here, lots of commercials for them too. |

Is it really such a big thing in North America? I have never bought a lottery ticket in the US, let alone bought them often. Neither do any of my family members or any of my friends buy them often. Never had a lotto pool at any workplace I've been at.
I do see lottery ticket (宝くじ) stands all over the place in Japan, though. |

I don't know about the popularity level of lotteries in the U.S., but in Canada, they're very popular. I just assumed they were popular in the U.S. because the jackpots there are probably the largest in the world.
What helps lotto sales in Canada is the fact that virtually every convenience store sells tickets where you pick your own numbers. Convenience stores have to have these machines because any store that doesn't will lose customers to a nearby store that does (have a machine).
Many Canadians will buy a lotto ticket for $3 to round off a $7 purchase of beer or food (to make it $10).
The federal government, which runs the lotteries, constantly bombards the public with TV ads boasting about this week's giant jackpot.
As far as I know, lottery sales in Japan are limited to the official lottery counters in train stations and around town. Maybe buying lotto tickets is too mendokusai for Japanese people. |

The US def has lottos. They are sold at most convenience and gas stations. Super markets too. Depending on the state, they had a lot of ads for them too.
Anyhow, for me lotto is a bit low class. I only occasionally have played when i had an office pool. I did it to be polite. I also, when I turned 18 did probably $10 worth of scratch off.
It isn't worth it imho, and most people realize that. Might as well spend your fun money on fun stuff, and invest your money as well. |

My brother-in-law has bought them for years and has never won.
All it takes though, is winning once.
In Fuchu, horse racing is where it is at. |
