This is what they offer at Jazan University for an English Language Instructor:

Basic: 4080 + 350 for each year up to 5 years of experience + 20% + TA 500 - so the maximum would be just 7496 SAR.

Are salaries like this in KSA these days? It used to be much higher, I know.

Please do let me know if there are other places that offer a better pay.

Seriously? That is the type salaries that were being paid in the low pay countries like Oman back in early 90s.

Do you have no educational credentials or experience? No BA? No CELTA?

If you do have credentials and 2-3 years of experience, you can get more than that at the small colleges around Oman... (about $1000 a month more) and not deal with any of the restrictions of Saudi Arabia.

Do they have a different salary for teachers from India?
Please do let me know how to get more info on Oman jobs.

You mean, because of the nationality? But I used to get two times this salary three years back in KSA.

The only difference between the 'native English teachers' and 'others' was with the special allowance and perhaps HRA. The basic salary was the same for all in the Ministry jobs.

What I need to know is whether the salaries for the Language Instructor posts have come down generally.

In KSA salary is related to your nationality.

Well, I know the general situation there. I was warned last time too - asked to expect lower than the lowest offered pay etc. but got a decent salary which was not too different from what the 'native' English speakers were getting. In fact a colleague from India with a PhD and good academic accomplishments was getting more than what they got. I know that the situation is not equal anyway, if one thinks of what everyone should get purely on the basis of qualifications, experience and quality.
But my question remains: Is there a big difference in the salaries from what it used to be three years back? I notice that the basic pay remains the same, but I used to get a 100% special allowance back then and what they offer now is a mere 20%. Does that vary from one university to the other, or is this a general trend that the special allowance is lowered?
And, is the post of Asst.Professor always filled by someone who has her/his PhD awarded?

It will depend on the university and your luck.

Your offer is a rip off. This past August 2012 my contract offer was 12,000 SR per month; a lump sum housing allowance of 17,000 SR; lump sum furniture allowance of 8,500 SR; and Travel allowance of 500 SR per month. This was for Jazan University. So you are being ripped off.

Many Indians, Pakistanis and Filipinos are getting less. "The world is ill-divided." and I am not trying to justify salary scale determined by skin colour - but that is the way it works. Well, nationality rather than skin colour.

It makes sense. At half the salary of a native speaker, an Indian can still save enough to go home and live like king. The arabs can't tell the difference, anyway. Hell, I've had students correct my native speech because it didn't conform to the pidgin they'd heard all their lives.

Well, this was a bit like what I used to get three years back, with the same benefits you mention.

Not true in the case of a well qualified teacher. The salary in India for a college/university teacher in his forties is around 10000 SAR or more now. They have job assurance till they turn 60, and get a pension as well. No one in that position would think of it as a 'great' opportunity to go all the way to another country to get less than that.

Perhaps there are some who are not qualified to teach in colleges/universities in India; or fail to get a permanent job even with the qualifications; or are in the initial years of their service when the salary is not as high, and feel happy about whatever they get.

It's really sad that the world is ill-divided.
