Hi all,

I was advised by one of my lecturers to get my CELTA qualification. Other than it being v. expensive, i didn't think there was a need for it if i was going to get my M.A. The only advantage it has is that i'll be a recognised teacher in Australia, therefore allowing me to get 1 year teaching experience while i finish my M.A. Do you guys think it's worth it?

Regards
Mostafa

Hi Aussieteacher,

I'm not sure that my advice will be any more helpful than Scot's, but I think I agree with him. If you have no formal training in education, I would recommend getting the CELTA. I didn't do it because I had my first degree in secondary education and at least had taken education courses and done practice teaching for 6 weeks.

MAs are nice and I have one of those too, but they often give you no actual experience 'teaching.' The CELTA actually teaches you to teach - and most people find it very useful.

If it also gives you other benefits in Australia, it seems worth the investment. So, I used more words, but passed on the same message. Good Luck! Smile

If you want a job in language schools in Europe, and most of the better ones in Asia, you'll need the CELTA.
If you have a degree in a non-language related field you'll need the CELTA.

Although I have an MA and a few years of teaching experience, I have had some rejections because I don't have a CELTA. I can say, however, from my experience, that there are some schools that will scoff at the CELTA and prefer that you have an MA. I think it would be wise to have both.
