My first thought was Mohammed (Peace be upon him) had instructed him in a dream to oversee the building of the great mosque in London, in Birmingham, in Liverpool, in Sheffield in Glascow etc.. Actually being a second generation Muslim, I think he'll just convert to Christianity.

The election of Sadik Khan is about diversity and tolerance, it has nothing to do with building mosques. London has its great mosque since 1978 when Sadik was 8-year old. London is a city of tolerance, and the best city to be a Muslim. Sadik will be the most powerful Muslim politician in the Wesern world.
Sadik will be busy solving the mess left by Boris, and will do his best to fix the problem of social housing and transport, and the regeneration of London.

The United Sates has had Obama, and London will have Sadiq - This is the correct political equation of diversity.

If you disagree, then you are free to dream as you like!

He got a big chunk of his election funding from property developers. Be interesting to see how much social housing appears under his term.

Big difference between London and Calgary, London is a capital city with a population of 8.54M , whereas Calgary is not a capital city, with only 1.1M.

It is like comparing Imperial College London with University of Calgary. Very Happy

Congratulations to Mr. Khan. Perhaps as the most powerful Muslim politician in the Western world he could ask King Salman when the Saudis will permit cathedrals, synagogues and temples in KSA. Wink

The Grand Mufti of the Magic Kingdom says no. Laughing

Well, Mr Khan is a politician not a Mufti or a religious leader to ask Saudi Arabia or any other country what to permit or not permit. This is not listed in his agenda.

Sadiq Khan promised to freeze all London's Tube, train and bus fares for 4 years if elected. He claimed this would cost 450 million pounds over 4 years, but TfL says the real cost would be 1.9 billion pounds as passenger numbers increase by 5% every year.

Khan has vowed to make London 'a better place', so let's see what happens.

What on earth is a Mufti? Is he like the Pope?

Seriously, are you asking what is a Mufti, after all those years you spent in the Magic Kingdom?

The Mufti is not like the Pope. No Pope in Islam.

The term mufti is a direct equivalent of the later western term professor, meaning one who is qualified to profess independent opinion on a subject (same as fatwa). According to him, this was the highest level of academic credentials in classical Islamic academic tradition, above mudarris (doctor meaning teacher), and faqih (meaning Master)--a hierarchy later adopted in Western academic tradition.

William Cleveland wrote in his A History of the Modern Middle East that muftis were "experts in Islamic law qualified to give authoritative legal opinions known as fatwas; muftis were members of the ulama establishment and ranked above qadis".

I think you need a Mufti to direct you in the right path. Laughing

You have to read the lips of Mr khan, sometimes politicians say something, but they mean something else.

I think Mr Khan may make London 'a better place', but not necessarily 'a happy place'? Let's see what happens. Very Happy

Some Muslims would say that I don't. My quip was not about not wanting mosques in the West. It is similar to what the Mahdi said to General Gordon in the movie "Khartoum". Sadik is a second generation Muslim so perhaps he embraces the liberal ideas of the West. I have seen some second generationers that do.

I am sure the house of Obama is not happy with your comment.
