Per their selection process:

You can check on the status of your application by logging into the online application at any time during this process. You may also request an update regarding your application or the matching and selection process via email at fellow@ ...

When does one typically find out if one gets placed in a project? Anyone else apply for the upcoming cycle?

It depends on which locations you targeted, how many applicants are vying for the same project locations, and how good a fit your qualifications are. Keep in mind, there are about 100 projects worldwide and lots of applicants to sift through by the June application deadline. (That's about when you'll find out if you were selected for a project.) RELOs make the final decision since the US embassies administer the projects.

Anyway, I wasn't being flippant. My point is that you either check out the FAQs or contact the ELF program coordinators directly to find out your exact status rather than to wait here for experiences from ELF candidates who expect to head to Rwanda, Guatemala, Algeria, wherever, in late summer.

Good luck.

It is not always easy.
Years ago, I was working in Poland at a university.
I had taught at a Russian university and twice in Morocco.
I have a MA in TESOL.
I had studied Russian for five years.

I applied to work in the Ukraine with the ELF program.
Waited some time. Got rejected. Don't know why.

ELF applicants who bring experience from other areas (e.g., curriculum development, teacher training, ESP, online learning, test design, k-12 teaching, etc.) tend to stand out. Versatility counts.

I applied for the 2016/17 cycle by the priority deadline last November and still no word from ELF. When does one typically find out if one gets placed in a project?

Unless they're extremely behind in reviewing applications, if you were never interviewed, then you didn't make it into the pool of available applicants.

danmbob,

It is not uncommon for some folks to get picked up late in the game: May, June, and even July notifications are not unheard of. Keep your fingers crossed. I'd shoot Georgetown a quick email to inquire and to let them know you're still very much interested in filling a position.

Which is what I had suggested as well. Best to go to the source rather than spin your wheels wondering.

Do you think bringing a wife and small child affected my candidacy? Most of the ELF blogs I've found are single people

Based on your target destination(s), maybe --- maybe not. See the following from the ELF faq page:

Quote:
Dependents and Accompanying Persons:
Can I bring someone with me?

Yes, an accompanying person or dependent may join you for all or part of the fellowship period (10 months or less) unless otherwise stated in the project description. Please make sure to include information about your plans to travel with a dependent or accompanying person in your application. This information may help us facilitate a successful match. Your answers to these questions will not preclude you from being considered for the English Language Fellow Program, however you may not be considered for certain projects due to special country requirements or restrictions.
