Does anyone know if it's possible to land a science teaching job in China? I've previously worked as an English teacher in Mexico but my degree is in biology so ideally I'd like to score something related to my degree.
I don't have any formal teaching qualifications. I'm currently working as a university librarian in the UK.
Cheers! |

You could probably do a pre university program, but for proper international schools you'd need a teaching license. |

Yes, this is good advice. As you said related, then it appears that you would appear open to the prep program. There is high demand across the county for those with backgrounds such as yours, and the pay is excellent compared to many other positions in the PRC. |

Yes it is. I have one. I teach Math, Science and Business in a public high school with an international program. I just have my degree and TESOL. |

Yes, with a subject related degree and a minimum of 2 years work experience you can. You might need a bit of luck though, if competing against licensed teachers (obviously). But, I think the demand is there for candidates with Science related degrees to teach Biology/Chemistry/Physics to middle/high schools at public and private levels. There are also some positions at elementary level teaching General Science (my current position). I do not have a teaching license. |

EireLDN:
I have a different take on this. But first, is this just an idea to teach in China for a couple of years, or do you want to teach science long term? If the former, then go for it. However, if you fancy yourself teaching science overseas (and possibly the UK) for the next umpteen years, then set yourself up for success now to avoid disappointment down the road.
We've seen posts throughout the Cafe forums from EFL teachers overseas lamenting about how impossible it is to get into the top international schools worldwide because 1) they don't have a license/certification; or 2) their qualification doesn't match their degree in history, business, computer science... or teaching experience; or 3) they have a proper teaching qualification but lack the requisite experience from their home country. Not everyone can easily return home to complete k-12 teacher training. And trying to get qualified via a distance teacher training program has its own logistical headaches.
However, in your case, you're already in the UK, which puts in a very desirable (and enviable) position to get properly qualified and gain experience before heading abroad to teach science. If you commit to the time and effort of getting both the qualification and two years' UK teaching experience, you can pretty much head to any of the better British and IB-curriculum schools worldwide.
For example, from a job ad for a science teacher at a private school in the UAE: Up to £2800/$4000 per month tax free with year-round airfare for self and family (spouse + 1 child), £700/$1000 relocation allowance, medical for self and family (spouse + 1 child), employer-paid furnished accommodations, national holidays and vacation paid, tuition for 1 child, etc.
Some food for thought as you think about potential career paths and opportunities abroad and in the UK, and what it will take to get there. |
