There are a lot of factors to keep in mind here. Even in Istanbul how much you will need to spend depends largely on the area in which you live, but if it's a city in the east, things will be much cheaper.
For example, if you are buying your produce from the weekly pazar (outdoor farmers market) and remaining groceries from supermarkets such as BİM, A101, UCZ, Çağrı Semt, Şok, etc. in Istanbul, I think you are looking at about 100-200 TL per week for food and other house essentials. Transportation depends on you, but I would budget at least 200-300 TL per month for that, so 1.200 TL total for groceries and transportation when not eating out at all, which is healthier, cleaner, and cheaper but more time-consuming.
If you want to eat out, factor in an average meal out costing about 20 TL a person. A cheap döner with ayran can be found for as little as 3 TL or on average about 5 TL, but it's not the healthiest.
What remains is housing, which you said is covered, and its related expenses such as internet (60-90 TL/month), electricity (50-100 TL/month), gas (20-40 TL/month in the summer but as high as a few hundred in the winter), and water (40-80 TL/month).
Remember, it's not how much you make that matters. It's how much you save, which largely depends on your own spending habits. If you're frugal, you may be able to save up a good 1.000-2.000 a month as a full-time English teacher here. It's not a lot, and Turkey is generally not the place to come to save up, but it is something nice to have for expensive purchases you want to make or trips you want to take in the country, which really is beautiful and is worth exploring.
Let me know if you have a more specific question. Perhaps you wouldn't mind sharing your monthly salary and where you'll be living. |
